Dragon Tutorial
07/16/10 at 14:55:06

So I've been working on a simple dragon sculpture tutorial http://featherheartcreations.iboards.us/viewtopic.php?t=2  Sorry some of the pictures are bad, most where taken with my phone Smiley One day I'll start a better one, I've just been short on time.
My husband too these great pictures Smiley

I hope to have him all done for my art show on the 22nd but don't think I will Sad I can't come up with a color scheme I like.
He's based loosely of some old art of mine http://enchantmentsart.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d186brl
So he will have a little bird on his hand and one one his tail Smiley

Great tutorial!  And I love your dragon; he has such personality!

The only thing I'm a little concerned about is that you only set the clay for 10 minutes. That will cure the surface layer but not the insides, and the plasticizers in the unbaked inner clay will eventually compromise the surface layer.  I'd hate to see your lovely dragon crack!  Baking times are not cumulative so you'll need to do a full bake.  (You probably know this and are planning to do a full bake when he's finished, I'm guessing.)

Lol yeah thats just setting time for the clay so I don't mess up the details. I do a finally baking time before I paint.  I also do a layer of liquid polymer over some spots before I paint to fill in and weak spots Smiley

I do that too, with liquid polymer. No matter what blend of clay I use, I always seem to get little cracks in the clay.

Pretty nice tutorial; technique-wise, I didn't see anything much different from the norm, but I'm sure sculptors learning the ropes, or perhaps trying their hand at a dragon for the first time, will find it useful.

The dragon itself looks good--I like the head sculpt in particular which conveys a sense of innocence/wonder to me, and the scale work is impressive too.
