The Dollmaker

Sold

The dollmaker has been a long time in the making, but I think he was well worth the wait. He is an old gentleman who like myself enjoys bringing new creatures and people into being. He's had many years to perfect his craft, and lovingly adds minor touches to breathe life into his dolls. His hands are bent with age and arthritis, but still he plugs away at his craft.

He is gently holding a fairy's head and painting her lips a luscious red and has his scissors, needles and material ready to create other aspects of her creation. Under his work table sits a large basket with material, ribbons and bric-a-brac, along side his books on human anatomy and fantasy dolls.

The Dollmaker, like all my work is completely hand sculpted without the use of molds of any kind.

His head, hands and feet are sculpted from polymer clay over a wire armature. His body is soft sculpture with weight added to his bottom to give him extra stability. He sits very securely by himself on his work stool.

The only items I didn't make myself by hand are the pins and needles in his pin cushion, and the base on which he sits. The base was store bought, but hand finished by myself. His clothes are all hand sewn, and his shoes are made from leather with polymer clay soles, and hand hammered aluminum buckles. His suspenders are made from cloth and leather, and the buttons that adorn his pants, and shirt are hand made from polymer clay.

His stool is hand made from dowels and the seat is woven with cotton cording. His worktable is hand made from redwood. The basket was assembled from polymer clay and bits of material, ribbon and other trims were cut and added, and can be removed and replaced.

The brushes are all made from various mediums, including mohair, wood and polymer clay. The vase, paint pot, and pincushion are all made from polymer clay as well. The scissors are hand hammered galvanized steel wire and although they don't move, they are sharpened. The thread spools are hand carved from wooden dowels, and are wrapped in real thread.

The books are both hand assembled and bound and contain numerous images of anatomy, and the doll book contains dozens of photos of actual dolls and the names of their makers who are all wonderful friends and talented doll artists. They both measure approximately 1 X 1 1/2 inches. The anatomy book contains 42 pages of (unreadable) text and illustrations, and the doll book contains 36 photos and the names of the artists of each fantasy art doll. You can view all of the photos later this week on my web site which you can access through my about me page.

Thanks to everyone on the fantasyfinsnfairydolls list for graciously allowing me to use your work in the doll book!

His hair is all hand rooted tussah silk, and his clothes are made from assorted cottons. The detail just doesn't come through in the photos, but his skin is highly detailed with veins, spots, and wrinkles galore. His fingernails are all applied separately, and his eyes are hand painted.

The dollmaker is 13 inches tall in a standing position. He can be gently posed and can sit just about anywhere.

As with all my work, none of these items will be reproduced, and his clothes, furniture and miscellaneous items are all original, hand made, and will never be duplicated.
